Writing Activities
Activity 1:
The book A Tale Dark and Grimm by Adam Gidwitz combines many different versions of the fairytale Hansel and Gretel to create one big story of this classic tale. You might have heard this fairytale growing up as well! (If not you can read the children's version of Hansel and Gretel here.)
Now it's your turn to recreate this fairytale and make it your own! A Tale Dark and Grimm has some versions that are a little bit more gruesome than others, but you can decide how you want to tell this story. Use your imagination! Be very vivid in your details, just like in this book, and make an exciting adventure for the readers! After you have written your version of the story, be a storyteller and tell your version to your friends and family!
Activity 2:
Hansel and Gretel are the two main characters in this story, but there is also many other characters who are in all versions of this fairytale and especially in A Tale Dark and Grimm. We often only see the story through the eyes of the narrator or the main characters, but what would happen if the story was told through the eyes of someone..or something else.
Your job is to pick another character or object's perspective in which to tell the Hansel and Gretel story from. It can be the parents, the witch, a log, a pebble, the oven, etc. While you are writing the story through this new perspective ask yourself these questions: 'What all can this character or object see?', 'How does this character or object feel about what's going on?','What is this character's or object's significance in the story?', and 'How is this character or object affected by what's happening in the story?' Make sure as you are writing you are using word choice's that help create the character's voice.
